What If "Normal" Is the Actual Disease?

You've been told that your anxiety is a malfunction.
You've been treated like your depression is a disease that needs to be managed, medicated, and eliminated so you can get back to "normal."
Here's the problem with that. Normal might be killing you.
Not dramatically. Not all at once. Just quietly, consistently, day after day — the slow erosion of the distance between who you are and who you were always meant to be. You stop feeling the gap. You stop hurting. And you call that healing.
It isn't.
The Research Nobody Talks About
In 2009, evolutionary psychiatrists Paul Andrews and J. Anderson Thomson published a paper in Psychological Review — one of the most prestigious journals in the discipline — arguing something the mental health industry has been slow to accept.
Depression isn't a broken brain.
It's an analytical engine. It pulls you out of business as usual so you can finally think through the problem that matters. The rumination, the withdrawal, the inability to find pleasure in ordinary things — those aren't random suffering. They are a coordinated, whole-body response designed to focus your resources on something that needs solving.
Anxiety isn't a disorder. It's your vigilance system registering the gap between who you are and who you're meant to be. It fires because the distance is real. Because something in you knows the current version of your life isn't the whole story.
Grief isn't weakness. It's the weight of what matters. And that weight has a direction.
Randolph Nesse, a psychiatrist at Arizona State University and one of the founders of evolutionary medicine, put it plainly in his book Good Reasons for Bad Feelings: the absence of these emotions isn't health. A person who feels no anxiety about their unrealized potential, no depression about their unlived life, no grief about what they've let go — that person isn't thriving. They've disabled the alarm.
The Vaccine
Here's the framework I've been building the My 12 Journeys™ program around.
Anxiety and depression are not the disease. They are the vaccine.
Just like a biological vaccine introduces a controlled version of a pathogen to trigger your immune response, these emotions introduce a controlled version of the pain of staying the same. They are designed to trigger a response. To wake you up. To drive you toward growth.
The real disease isn't depression. The real disease is normalcy. The comfortable, quiet, dangerous acceptance of a smaller life than the one you are capable of living.
We've been fighting off the vaccine so we can stay the same and be okay in our sameness. And in doing so, we've been suppressing the very mechanism that was designed to move us forward.
The Self-Discrepancy Engine
There's a framework in psychology called Self-Discrepancy Theory, developed by E. Tory Higgins in 1987 and validated extensively since.
It says this: you carry three versions of yourself simultaneously.
The Actual Self — who you believe you currently are.
The Ideal Self — who you hope and aspire to become.
The Ought Self — who you believe you should be.
When those versions diverge, you feel it. The gap between your Actual Self and your Ideal Self generates depression. The gap between your Actual Self and your Ought Self generates anxiety.
These aren't disorders. They are measurements. They are your nervous system reporting the distance between where you are and where you know you should be going.
When you medicate that signal into silence, you don't close the gap. You just stop being able to feel it. The gap remains. The life you could be living remains unlived. And you call the numbness recovery.
What the 12 Journeys Does Differently
The My 12 Journeys™ framework doesn't try to mute the alarm.
It teaches you to read the signal.
The Journey of Grief — one of the twelve foundational journeys — addresses grief, depression, anxiety, and anger not as pathologies to eliminate, but as a family of heavier emotions that share a common function. They register the presence of a gap. A loss. An unmet ideal. A betrayal of values.
Our archetype for this journey is Soraya. Her instruction isn't to push through the pain or get over it. It's this:
"Don't rush this pain. It's remaking you."
That's not poetry. That's clinical best practice grounded in five decades of behavioral science.
The goal of the 12 Journeys isn't to make you comfortable. It's to make you real. To help you feel the distance between who you are and who you're capable of being clearly enough that you choose to close it — not by lowering the ideal, but by rising to meet it.
That choice is where transformation begins.
What I'm Giving You Today
I've put together two documents and I'm attaching both of them to this post.
Document 1: The Vaccine and the Disease
This is the full research breakdown. It covers the evolutionary science behind why you feel the way you feel, the Self-Discrepancy Theory that explains what anxiety and depression are actually measuring, and the clinical evidence for why suppressing these signals makes things worse — not better. If you've ever wondered whether something is wrong with you for feeling the way you do, this document will reframe everything.
Document 2: The Awakening Protocol
This is the practical process. It's a five-phase framework built on the research for waking any human being to the recognition that their current reality no longer serves them — and attaching them to a vision of who they could become. It includes specific exercises, facilitator scripts, and adaptations for self-guided use. It works whether you're using it on yourself or walking someone else through it.
Read them in order. The first one explains why you feel the way you feel. The second one shows you what to do about it.
You Don't Have to Stay Small
If any part of you is tired of the distance between your current reality and the life you know is possible — these were made for exactly that moment.
The pain you've been carrying isn't a malfunction. It's a message. And the message has always been the same.
You were made for more than this.
The 12 Journeys exists to help you hear that message, understand what it's asking of you, and walk toward it gently, powerfully, and on your own terms.

Or reach out directly. I read every message personally.
Welcome to the path.
