1. The Definition
Optificing™ Pronunciation: \ ˈäp-tə-ˌfī-siŋ
Part of Speech: verb (gerund); Optificer™ (noun)
1. The strategic process of refining a system, product, or self beyond the threshold of basic acceptability ("satisficing") but intentionally halting refinement before reaching the point of diminishing returns ("optimizing") to pivot toward growth.
2. A fractal approach to creation that prioritizes high-impact expansion over flawless execution; a modern application of Aristotle’s "Golden Mean" applied to productivity—navigating between the apathy of settling and the paralysis of perfectionism.
3. (In the context of The 12 Journeys): The act of identifying a "Root" or "Shoot" that is functional, sharpening it for maximum efficacy, and releasing it into the world before the ego demands perfection.
2. Etymology & Origin
Origin: Coined by author and human performance coach Nicholas Townsend Smith on December 25, 2025.
Etymology: A portmanteau blending two distinct economic and psychological concepts:
-
Optimization: From Latin optimus ("best"). The act of making something as perfect, functional, or effective as possible. In decision theory, this is often linked to Barry Schwartz’s concept of "Maximizing," which he correlates with increased anxiety and regret.
-
Satisficing: A term coined by Nobel Laureate Herbert Simon in 1956, blending satisfy + suffice. Simon’s theory of Bounded Rationality proved that because human cognitive resources are limited, "satisficing" is often the most rational strategy for survival.
The Linguistic Bridge: Smith observed a critical gap in human performance language. "Satisficing" (per Simon) often implies a tolerance for mediocrity ("it's good enough"), while "Optimization" (per Schwartz) often leads to resource exhaustion. Optificing™ was created to describe the "Sweet Spot" of The Giant: excellent enough to be remarkable, but delivered with speed.
3. The Science & Geometry: Why It Works
To understand Optificing™, we must look beyond psychology to Fractal Geometry and Evolutionary Biology.
The Fractal Insight (Attribution: Benoit Mandelbrot): While James Clear (Atomic Habits) popularized the idea that growth comes from small, 1% improvements, it was mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot who provided the geometric proof. Mandelbrot discovered that complex natural forms (coastlines, clouds, biology) are "Self-Similar"—they are the result of simple patterns repeated infinitely.
-
Satisficing is a Straight Line: It connects Point A to Point B efficiently, but it has no depth. It is survival.
-
Optimizing is a Perfect Circle: It seeks to smooth out all edges. But in nature, a smooth edge is a dead edge. A perfect circle cannot grow.
-
Optificing™ is the Koch Snowflake: Concept derived from Helge von Koch and Benoit Mandelbrot.
It takes a "Satisficed" shape (a triangle) and adds a new layer of growth to the edge. Then it repeats. It is always "complete" (closed loop) yet infinitely expanding.
The "Generator Equation": In the 12 Journeys, Optificing™ acts as the generator equation (similar to the Mandelbrot set equation $z_{n+1} = z_n^2 + c$). It takes the "Micro-mental" shift (the small step) and repeats it to create the "Monumental" result (The Giant).
4. The Conceptual Model: The Curve of Returns

To practice Optificing, one must visualize the "Curve of Returns," a concept rooted in the Pareto Principle (Vilfredo Pareto) and the Law of Diminishing Returns (Classic Economics).
-
Zone 1: Satisficing (The "Good Enough" Line): You stop as soon as the product works. It saves time but lacks impact. Outcome: Mediocrity.
-
Zone 2: Optificing™ (The "Remarkable" Zone): You continue to refine. The quality spikes dramatically, but the effort remains manageable. You stop exactly where the curve begins to flatten—maximizing the 80/20 Rule (Pareto). Outcome: Mastery.
-
Zone 3: Optimizing™ (The "Perfection" Trap): You continue working. You spend 80% more energy to gain only 1% more value. This is where "The Smalls" (fear, ego, procrastination) hide. Outcome: Paralysis.
5. The Optificing™ Matrix
Use this 2x2 matrix to self-diagnose where you are operating.
Action/Standards | Low Standards | High Standards |
|---|---|---|
Low Action | Apathy (The Couch Potato) | Perfectionism (The Dreamer/The Small) |
High Action | Satisficing (The Settler) | OPTIFICING™ (The Giant) |
-
Top Right (Perfectionism): High Standards + Low Action = Anxiety. (Supported by the research of Brené Brown on perfectionism as a defense mechanism).
-
Bottom Left (Satisficing): Low Standards + High Action = Mediocrity. (Supported by Herbert Simon's definition of adequacy).
-
Bottom Right (Optificing™): High Standards + High Action = Mastery. (Supported by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s concept of "Flow"—the balance between challenge and skill).
6. The Methodology: How to Optifice™
The Optificing™ Cycle
-
The Audit (Identify the Block): Assess the current state. Is it broken (needs fixing) or just dull (needs Optificing)?
-
The Target (Define "Remarkable"): Set the specific criteria for what "Ready" looks like. (e.g., "The chapter is ready when the reader feels the emotion," not "The chapter is ready when there are zero adverbs.")
-
The Sprint (The Hone): A time-boxed period of intense improvement. You do not optimize forever; you optifice for a set time (e.g., 90 minutes).
-
The Stop (The Launch): The disciplined act of releasing the work, even if your ego sees flaws. (Inspired by Seth Godin’s concept of "Shipping").
The Diagnostic: The Friction Point
The Rule: "When the effort to improve X feels heavier than the excitement of releasing X, you have passed the point of Optificing and entered Optimization. Stop immediately."
The Three Laws of Optificing
-
The Law of Impact: Value is created by shipping, not by polishing.
-
The Law of Diminishing Returns: Past a certain point, every hour you spend makes the product worse (by delaying it), not better.
-
The Law of the Giant: A Giant ships imperfect work to serve others; a Small hides perfect work to serve itself.
7. Case Studies: The Sweet Spot in Action
Scenario | Satisficing (Settling) | Optimizing (Perfectionism) | Optificing™ (The Giant) |
|---|---|---|---|
Writing a Book | Uploading the first draft with a Fiverr cover. (Result: Amateur) | Rewriting Chapter 4 ten times; agonizing over fonts. (Result: Never published) | Hiring an editor for flow; testing 3 covers; launching now to build authority. (Result: High Impact) |
The Masterclass | Using a blank white slide deck. (Result: Boring) | Animating every transition; obsessing over logo colors. (Result: Exhaustion) | Using a clean template with 3 powerful diagrams (Tree model) to anchor points. (Result: Effective Delivery) |
Personal Growth | "I get defensive. That's just how I am." (Result: No growth) | "I need 5 years of therapy before I can talk to my spouse." (Result: Isolation) | "I will use the 'Stop, Drop, and Roll' tool. It might be messy, but I won't lash out." (Result: Functional Growth) |
Business Launch | Generic template with "Lorem Ipsum" text. (Result: No Trust) | A/B testing button colors for 3 weeks before launch. (Result: Missed Market) | Punchy copy; flawless checkout; clean design. Launch now, add animations later. (Result: Cash Flow) |
8. Integration with The 12 Journeys
In the philosophy of The 12 Journeys, Optificing™ is the primary tool of "The Giant."
-
The Roots: Optificing™ is Root Efficiency. You don't need roots that go to the center of the earth (Optimizing); you need roots deep enough to hold the tree in a storm (Optificing™).
-
The Shoots: Optificing™ is Pruning. A gardener doesn't cut every branch (that kills the tree), and he doesn't let every branch grow wild (that weakens the fruit). He cuts selectively to maximize the yield.
-
The Small's Trap: The Small believes that if a creation isn't perfect, it isn't safe to be seen.
-
The Giant's Solution: A Giant uses Optificing™ to honor their creation by making it excellent, but honors their mission by shipping it.
9. The Optificer's™ Pledge & Slogans
The Pledge: "I will not let the perfect be the enemy of the good (Voltaire). I will hone this until it is sharp, and then I will strike. I ship for impact, not for ego."
Slogans:
-
"Don't Optimize. Optifice™."
-
"Satisficing is for settlers. Optificing™ is for Giants."
-
"Stop Polishing. Start Shipping."
-
"Perfection is a dead end. Optificing™ is an infinite horizon."
